Paul Robertson is an Australian animator and digital artist who is known for his pixel art sprites used in short films and video games and for his unique psychedelic colourful GIFs that keep popping up around the web taking people with them to weird realms with their unique otherworldly look. So while you probably never heard Paul Robertson’s name, we’re pretty sure you’ve seen his psychedelic GIFs.

Some of his more known projects were the animated shorts “Pirate Baby’s Cabana Battle Street Fight” & “Kings of Power 4 Billion %”, the music video for the indie pop song “Do the Whirlwind” by Architecture in Helsinki, the Gravity Falls episode “Fight Fighter”, and the games “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World”, “Wizorb” and his own Kickstarter funded “Mercenary Kings”.
TILL THESE DAYS HE SAYS HE STILL USES OLD PROGRAMS AND CLASSIC PIXEL TECHNIQUES. HE’S JUST FASTER AND MORE EFFICIENT WITH THEM, BUT HE SAYS YOU DON’T REALLY NEED ANY FANCY HIGH-END TECH
In an interview with The Verge Robertson said he started doing pixel animation when a friend gave him a DOS animation program and he just started messing around with it, and making little films, and it grew from there. He never really thought of it as “pixel art” at that time, it just had a low resolution and limited palette and so turned out that way. Till these days he says he still uses old programs and classic pixel techniques. He’s just faster and more efficient with them, but he says you don’t really need any fancy high-end tech to make pixel art.
