This investigative documentary is the first installment of Sacred Weeds, a four part television series of documentaries that explores the cultural impact of psychoactive plants. In this episode, Dr Andrew Sherratt dives deep into the ancient history of perhaps the most famous of the hallucenogenic plant medicines, the Fly Agaric mushroom (Amanita muscaria).
To uncover the mystery behind the historic mushroom, Sherratt assembled a team of specialists to conduct a series of experiments in which volunteers consumed a controlled dose of the mysterious fungi. The researchers recorded everything over the next 72 hours to determine how the effects of these mushrooms relate to the sacred status they hold in some of the world’s earliest cultures.
